May is Mental Health Month: Understanding the Importance of Mental Wellness

Mental Health Month is a time to recognize the importance of mental health and wellness, and to promote awareness of mental health issues in our communities. Every year, this observance is held in May to bring attention to the importance of good mental health and encourage people to take care of their mental wellbeing.


Mental Health Month began in 1949, started by the organization Mental Health America (MHA). The goal of Mental Health Month was to raise awareness about mental health and decrease the stigma surrounding mental illness. Since then, the observance has grown and now includes a variety of events and initiatives across the country.

In 1955, Mental Health Week was expanded to Mental Health Month, a month-long observance that takes place every May. This change allowed for more time to promote mental health awareness and engage in educational initiatives. Mental Health Month was embraced by mental health organizations and advocacy groups across the country, and it has since become a staple of mental health awareness in the United States.

Mental Health Month is important because it shines a light on the many challenges and barriers that people with mental health issues face, including stigma, discrimination, and lack of access to care. By raising awareness about these issues, we can work to create a more supportive and inclusive society that prioritizes mental health and wellness.


There are many ways to participate in Mental Health Month and show your support for mental health and wellness. Here are a few ideas:

  • Attend a mental health event or workshop in your community.
  • Share your story or your experiences with mental health on social media using the hashtag #MentalHealthMonth.
  • Donate to a mental health organization or charity.
  • Educate yourself about mental health and wellness, including signs and symptoms of mental illness and available resources for support.

One important aspect of mental health and wellness is self-care. Self-care involves taking time to prioritize your own needs and engage in activities that bring you joy and relaxation. Self-care can look different for everyone, but some common examples include exercise, meditation, journaling, spending time with loved ones, and engaging in creative hobbies.

Taking care of your own mental wellbeing is not only important for your own health, but also for the health of those around you. When you prioritize self-care and take care of yourself, you are better equipped to show up for others and be present in your relationships and responsibilities.

As we celebrate Mental Health Month this May, let’s remember the importance of mental health and wellness, and work to prioritize self-care in our daily lives. By taking care of ourselves and supporting others, we can create a more compassionate and resilient society that values mental health and wellness.
